I grew up in Ottawa and in order to see the bands I wanted I started booking them myself. By the age of 15 I was doing a little bit of everything; publicity, promotion, and management. I have continued working as an independent freelance publicist specializing in the punk/ underground music scene but I love all kinds of music. My focus is more on making sure whatever I am involved with has a positive and inclusive message. Since 1999 I have been running Fat Wreck Chords Canada and have continued to develop and expand my client roster including internationally known artists,up an coming bands, festivals, record labels from all over the world, movies, books and theatre productions.
I decided when launching “Melanie Kaye PR” that the main criteria for choosing who I work with is I must genuinely love it in order to stand behind each project in an authentic way and this policy has served me and my clients well. Over the last 35 years I have developed strong relationships with a wide variety of media outlets across Canada and the world. They have come to know whoever I am working with is worthwhile and news worthy. My reputation is based on a strong work ethic and the trust that has been established that Melanie Kaye PR is not a “smoke and mirrors” business.
“Find a job you enjoy doing, and you will never have to work a day in your life.” -Mark Twain
“Build a good name. Keep your name clean. Don’t make compromises, don’t worry about making a bunch of money or being successful. Be concerned about doing good work. Protect your work and if you build a good name, eventually that name will be its own currency. Life is like a roller coaster ride, it is never going to be perfect. It is going to have perfect moments and rough spots, but it’s all worth it.” -Patti Smith
These two quotes really resonate with me.
If you have a project you would like to discuss working on together please feel free to get in touch.
I believe there's 4 types of people in the music business. Type one is great at their job but a total drag to be around, we'll call this one " the Alligator", cause you respect it's power and ability to survive but you wouldn't want to get in bed with it. Type two is complete shit at their job but a total blast to be around, we'll call this one "the Chimpanzee", cause it'd be fun to hang out with one but it's never gonna accomplish anything for you. Type three is complete shit at their job and about as fun to talk to as a rock, we'll call this one "the city rat" cause they're everywhere in the music biz. Type four is both great at their job and a complete pleasure to be around, we'll call this one "the polar bear", cause unfortunately they are almost extinct in the music biz. Melanie Kaye is a Polar Bear.
