BreakOut West Announces NoMeansNo as Hall of Fame Inductees for the 2015 Western Canadian Music Awa

The Western Canadian Music Alliance is pleased to announce long-time Canadian punk rock band NoMeansNo, as inductee to the Western Canadian Music Hall of Fame for 2015. The group originally hails from Victoria, BC; the location for this year's BreakOut West Festival, Conference and Western Canadian Music Awards, September 17-20.

NoMeansNo's induction into the Hall of Fame will occur during the Western Canadian Music Awards Gala on Sunday, September 20, honoring the seminal punk rockers among the many talented 2015 Nominees. Alberta Music Executive Director, WCMA board member and Captain Tractor front man Chris Wynters had this to say about the band, "NoMeansNo is one of Western Canada's greatest music exports. Their smart and edgy songs, along with their pioneering DIY ethic, influenced many and paved the way for Canada's indie revolution in the 90's. I think I saw them play about a hundred times as a kid in Victoria in the 80's, and they always blew the roof off the venue! I can't think of a more deserving and fitting inductee into the WCMA Hall of Fame."

NoMeansNo was formed by brothers Rob and John Wright in 1979, and the band has been a force in punk music since. With an immense underground following spanning North America and Europe, NoMeansNo has toured consistently since their formation, and despite their non-pursuit of commercial fame, maintain an exalted position in Canadian music. The band has left its mark of influence on punk rock music across the globe, with its complex musicality, and politically and sociologically charged songwriting; being referred to as "the secret influence on a fair amount of both early-'90s math rock and emo", or even "Devo on a jazz trip", and "Motörhead after art school".

Since the early eighties, NoMeansNo has released 12 studio albums, 10 EP's, 4 singles, 4 live albums and numerous compilations, both on Jello Biafra's Alternative Tentacles label, and on the band's self-started Wrong Records. The Wright brother duo makes up the base of the group though guitarist and sometime-vocalist Andy Kerr was a member from 1983-1992, including the 1989 release of the band's seminal album Wrong. In1993 guitarist and vocalist Tom Holliston joined the band, forming the NoMeansNo of today. The three are also members of NoMeansNo's touring side project The Hanson Brothers, a "puck rock" group of hockey playing goons, modeled from the cult classic 1977 film Slap Shot.

The Alternative Tentacles website best sums up the reasons why the western Canadian music community has chosen to honor a band who has influenced so many western Canadian musicians today: "NOMEANSNO define post-modernist hardcore. In a word (or several), they are intelligent, articulate, studied, thoughtful, violent, passionate, intense, and playful. Acclaimed by peers and adored by fans, this musically adept trio has consistently thrilled sweaty crowds around the world. The band is a punk rock success story, albeit on their own terms, well hidden beneath the radar of the music industry." for more information on NoMeansNo, visit them at www.NoMeansWhatever.com
